5.1 Environmental systems
are managed to high standards
Pacifc Controls is a world leader in environmental
controls and remote monitoring of building management
systems. This brings important benefts for their data
centers, in which redundant precision cooling systems
are installed and closely monitored to ensure the peak
performance of all the equipment installed in them. The
systems are monitored continuously to ensure that the
temperature and humidity are kept within tightly defned
limits. Airfow is directed for optimum heat dissipation
and racks are arranged so that cooling air is separated
from warm exhaust air. The environment systems are
arranged in an N+1 redundant confguration so that there
is no single point of failure. Predictive maintenance using
Pacifc Controls world leading Galaxy environmental
monitoring service ensure that possible problems are
averted by pre-emptive action.
The PUE rating of Data Centres is becoming an
important performance indicator, the average Data
Center PUE is currently around 1.9. PCS data centres
achieve a PUE of NBED. By monitoring the facility in real
time, measuring temperatures, fan speeds, CPU activity
and the power consumption of PDUs for individual racks,
the Galaxy platform can be used to fne-tune the HVAC
system so that cooling is increased in proportion to
processor activity. Pacifc Controls has found that just
improving the way systems are operated can save 20%
of the power and cost.
5.2 Connectivity and power supplies
are fully redundant
Data centre connectivity is provided via reliable,
dedicated, high-speed Internet connections and leased
lines with end-to-end redundancy in both the Internet
links and the core network devices. The main internet
connections are over secure MPLS VPNs with redundant
leased lines to multiple ISP POPs to ensure continuous
operation. Connectivity is monitored 24x7 so that any
issues are rectifed as fast as possible. Pacifc Controls
enforces stringent SLAs on its connectivity providers to
ensure high availability.
The data centres are ready for business users with raised
fooring, lockable rack cabinets, and secure cages. Site
availability is 99.982% Data cabling is laid out on cable
trays for ease of access and power and data cables are
laid out separately. LANs for different clients are logically
segregated using VLANs. WAN connectivity is offered to
multiple carriers in Meet Me rooms (MMRs). Public and
private IP address pools are available. Individual cabinets
are available with key, combination lock and card-key
access.
Power is supplied through totally redundant power
grids from different sources while uninterruptible power
supplies (UPS) supported by diesel generators deliver
backup power and protect data centre systems from
power fuctuations. The generators and their fuel
supplies are continuously monitored to ensure smooth
switchover in the event of a power failure. The power
systems are concurrently maintainable.
